I'm making slow progress with my shorts. They are rather putzy to start, compounded by my failure to mark where to attach the belt on the back. There were 2 marks and I only got one of them. So I first did the darts without attaching them. Ripped them out. Added the strips, realized I put them in the wrong place. Ripped them out. Got out my pattern sheet and marked my fabric (HOW much easier would this have been had I done this in the beginning????) and put them in for the 3rd and final time. Then I did the front pleats and belt strips, and then the 2 belt carriers. Of course each of these pieces - 4 belt strips and 2 belt loops - had to be cut, sewn and turned. I'm not pleased with the way these turned out - I think they look a little homesewn - the corners didn't turn out clean or sharp. THEN I dug out some white shirting for the pockets - the print was going to show through on the white, plus it's some pretty hefty fabric to have 3 layers on your thighs. So I got the pockets cut out and attached and one side seam done up before dinner was ready. I know I frequently omit pockets because, well, I'm lazy, but I really wanted them on the shorts so I put the effort in there. The only putzing left now is the zipper and that's no biggie (thank you, again, Nancy!). Oh, and a buttonhole and button. And the hem - cuffed. Putzy. The beauty is in the details, right?
There were a couple of comments about tracing BWOF, and I wanted to say that I am a total convert. It really doesn't take a lot longer than messing around with the wads of tissue that come in a Vogue envelope: hunting, cutting, pressing, refolding.... THAT annoys me. And add that I'm never sure what size I'll end up with, I just about don't bother anymore. There are some patterns I like out of the big 4, but I've been consistently disappointed in the final product. With BWOF, I've been consistently pleased. Failures have always been my fault - poor fabric/pattern match or boo-boos. I do tend to make the same thing a few times (ahem, the Marlene pants come to mind) because once something's traced it's easy. I haven't tried a dress yet, though, so there's still uncharted territory out there.
Thank you all for the nice things you said about my skirt. I really like it, too. I wore it on Tuesday and it was comfortable all day (if a bit wrinkly). I matched it with a white button down short sleeved shirt (RTW).
I, too, am guilty of not marking things and then having to do and redo and then finally resort to the pattern. I think that was Fulmer's problem, not doing things right the first time!LOL I hope this season is a lot better, but I'm afraid it will take a few years to build the team back up to where it should be.
