Well, when I went to make a pattern out of my rtw skirt, I noticed there are darts in the back (front is flat), and well, I don't know how to do that. I mean, I can sew darts, but I don't have any idea how wide/long to make them into my pattern for the fit I want. SOOOO, off to plan B. Luckily, I had a plan B, eh? I took one of the patterns that I just got from BMV: M5590, and cut it out to view C. Now, I knew this stuff would ravel, it's a woven wool, but HOLY MOLY! I was prepared and started finishing all the edges before I did anything past cutting and marking. But I had a devil of a time getting this stuff thru the machine. It just wanted to fall apart on me. I finally got a rhythm going that included widening my stitch to max (7), loosening the pressure a bit on the pressure foot and using my seam ripper to push the threads thru. Occasionally, the whole thing would just nest-up (is that REALLY a word) in the pressure foot and needle. It got better as I worked on my techiques. I got a lot done, though. Cut, marked, finished edges, front darts done. Tonight I hope to do the back: darts, zipper and seam. Then the sides, if I get that far, cause really they're nothing. That will leave facing the waist and hemming, including the kick-pleat. I'm going to use some tricot for facing, I just can't see adding the bulk that self facing would do. I will probably fuse interfacing to it first for body. Oh, and the belt loops before I face. I think I should be done Friday night. Got a pile of that fabric left, though. I had 3 yards (I thought 2.5) and probably only used about 1. It's too distinctive to make something else out of it. And, depending on how tonight goes, I may never want to see the stuff again. It would make a pretty jacket but: (1) I'm afraid of jackets, (2) you would never get lots of small pieces sewn together before it became a ball of yarn in your sewing room floor. I'll see if Karen want's the rest. There's plenty to still work with, if you're willing.
Also ran by (and then wandered around) Hancock's. Picked up some decent stuff off clearance to use as muslins, etc. And they HAVE ZIPPERS! Yea! So I CAN put one in my skirt tonight. Hope this one goes better. They had McCall's patterns 5 for $5, so i bought (duh) 5. One is "how to make the perfect pants", looked like a good idea, LOL. I may go back and get 5 more, but I'm not really sure that there are 5 more I want. Or 5 duplicates...
