I've been plagued by a number of failures recently that have just about robbed me of my sewing mojo. So today I chose an easy, fun project that I could complete and use:

I used the pattern I snagged from my MIL over Christmas:

It is a 1982 from McCall's and it wasn't without it's challenges. Primarily a missing page of directions and missing pattern pieces. I really kind of wanted the bibbed style, but yes, that piece was missing. I may self draft one some time and add it. Or not. But anyway, it was fun and easy. I used some quilting fabric from Hancock's that I bought for room pillows when we first moved into the apartment and our bedroom stuff was still in Detroit. The red pillows are stashed in storage and I had about a yard left. For the pockets

I used a scrap left from making a Garman cover (a.k.a. a coat for Jill). I kind of liked the fringed salvage so I just left it as the top and added a little decorative stitching around the edge. I like the decorative stitches, but don't have much cause to use them day-to-day, so I took an opportunity. Another missing piece was the waist band, so I just winged it, I added the center as a "design element" rather than piecing the same fabric. I had enough to do it all in red, but that was a little boring for something as whimsical as an apron.
And I made a replacement cover for Kacy's collar:

so, yes, I sew for my dog. (Can you see me rolling my eyes? I am. And I'm afraid they'll get stuck there)
My next project will be a skirt from the same pattern

I used back in June for the mini-capsule
http://beebeepastiche.blogspot.com/2008/06/jcc-real-story-or-what-you-wont-read-on.html, V8363. Kind of a TNT for me, it's fast, it fits, and I can wear it to work. I think I'll make view C with the side buttons out of a GStreet $6 wool skirt length in a black windowpane - very small checks. I may cut tomorrow night and something to work on this week. Then perhaps I'll be ready to tackle the Burda slacks that I really want, but just a little scared of right now. I need to study the zipper tutorials. With a NYC and Baltimore shopping trip and a move planned in the next 6 months I need to move along some of my stash and I've had a very slow and disappointing winter of sewing so far.
BB,
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the picture of the apron; it is darling. The bib apron would also be cute and easy to do; just cut a rectangle for the lost bib. I'm glad that you're going back to your TNT skirt pattern; it always looked good on you and turned out well.
Happy New Year.

I love a fast project, especially one that turns out as nicely as your apron. I hope your Burda pants work out. Pants are tough.
ReplyDeletePants are easy. Zippers are tough.
ReplyDeleteI have a bibbed apron pattern from back in the dark ages (high school) that I never even cut. I'm mailing it to you, it's in a big envelope and I'll just stick a million stamps on it so they won't make me go to the post office. On the way. K
