If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Update for mid-week.

For those of you who just can't get enough of me... (that'd me my dog, really, that's about it) I got my BWOF pants cut out last night. I did, of course, skip the welt pockets (I'm still so ashamed) so these will go together pretty quickly. I will have finish all the seams, though, as this stuff ravels like the dickens. Just comes off in shreds. Oh, and I am COMPLETELY! out of interfacing. Not sure how that happened, but there it is. So I'll have to make a run to Hancock's before I can finish them. How annoying is that? Note to self: check to make sure I have a zipper for these BEFORE going shopping. [insert rolly eye icon]. I cut them out during a raging thunderstorm while the lights flickered and the far left lane of Highway 1 flooded and dinner baked uninterupted in my gas oven.

I washed up the brown linen and swirly fabric, also. The swirly will become a blouse that I have the pattern traced for. I want capri's out of the brown linen and don't know what pattern to use for them. Does this count as adding to stash if I use it this season?

And I replaced my sloppy sewing of the shorts carriers with a bar tack. Despite needing some practice with that stitch (it isn't self setting or automatic on THIS machine) it's a better look. I probably won't mess with any more of them. Just put them on and wear them.

If our weather ever warms back up. It's only about 65 today. JUNE in Washington DC. Where's all that global warming I keep hearing about? Must all be over a glacier somewhere, sure isn't over me. Let's see, what winter will this be? We've had Dogwood and Blackberry, so is this Magnolia Winter? Eh? Or Fireworks Winter (that may only occur in Michigan, not sure).

Now a little work for all you, my loyal followers. LOL. I will be spending about 3 weeks in Detroit this summer and will take my sewing machine with me (driving). What essentials would you also take to sew? There's a JoAnn's nearby, and I'll have my Envoy so space isn't an issue, but don't want to be ridiculous on taking stuff. Lists???

  1. Obviously, interfacing LOL. I would take my tools: shears/rotary cutter, tape measure, 6" sewing gauge, seam ripper (LOL again), tweezers, wahtever you like to have at hand while sewing. Basting thread, hand-sewing needles, pins. A couple or 3 specific projects and all the notions/lining et al you'll need or think you better get before you only have a JoAnn's available. The patterns and instructions! So take the entire BWOF issue!

How about a good light? Will there be one where you can set your machine up? If you don't have projects cut out before you go, you'll need your cutting mat or something to protect whatever surface you'll be cutting on.

Oh. Your reading glasses and at least one general sewing reference book in case you have a technique question. And your iron, possibly.

Welt pockets are nothing to be afraid of - like many other techniques, it just takes some practice. Maybe that could be one of your projects?

  2. I like the brown swirly fabric! Oooh.

    >>I did, of course, skip the welt pockets (I'm still so ashamed) so these will go together pretty quickly

I don't know that I'd blame you. ;-) Someone needs to hold a welt-pocket-along where we all suffer through learning it together.

  3. If you're going to Detroit, take a gun! Just kidding. I live in MI but not in Detroit. It is ranked as the most dangerous city in America.

  4. I'm calling this "Bastille winter." I agree with the gun! You could always take the dog. How about making it a challenge? Take one cookbook and one BWOF and see how many things you can do in three weeks (of course you have internet so cheating is available.) Does he have iron and board? Dining table? Take your box of feet, if you take the rotary cutter need the mat, you can use canned goods for weights. Take your sewing machine manual and try out all the stitches and techniques. If you knit, you could take a little roll of needles.. :) K

  5. When I take my sewing machine somewhere like this I chose what I want to sew before I go, then lay out each proposed project with the fabric, notions, thread and feet that I need, and put it all in a bag. Otherwise I take far too much! I agree on checking about the iron before you go.

  6. Oh, and can't you make a bar tack by just making a zigzag with length zero? Or am I thinking too simple? K

  7. I'm glad you'r e driving. I do not like the Detroit airport. We have to go through there sometines when we fly up to the nE. Go figure. anyway, I don't like that tunnel? that has all the psychodelic lights. It gives me the creeps. I apologize to all you Michigan folks if you really like the airport. My DH likes it. Of course, when you consider that I usually fly out of the little bitty teeny tiny Knoxville airport what can I say about any others?
I would try to plan out everything i would need for whatever I planned to make, but if there's a JoAnn's nearby I wouldn't worry too much. It might be fun just to take the machine and necessary tools, like scissors, etc... adn go shopping for fabric adn patterns once you get there.

  8. Projects bagged with all the notions and already cut out pieces are the way to go. Of course, I'm spending my whole summer driving back and forth between Michigan and Missouri and invariably I find I've left something that I need in the other location. Right now I'm afraid it's my best sunglasses, the Chanel ones. Argh, I'm going to be upset if they're lost.
Anyway, You're going to be way on the outskirts of Detroit, and I used to live way closer to City Limits than you'll be, so tell everyone to calm down about it. You won't need any guns. Geeze louise.

BeeBee, get yourself to Habermans, if you've never been. Worth the trip into Royal Oak.
As for yarn stores - do you knit too? Michigan has some of The Best LYS's.
